In 1985, the NBA prohibited Michael Jordan from wearing the Air Jordan 1 ‘Black/Red’ during games and charged him $5,000 for each game he wore them. The shoes violated the league's uniform policy because they did not include white, which was a part of the official team colors of the Chicago Bulls. However, Nike used this controversy to their advantage and created the ‘Banned’ campaign as a marketing strategy to launch and promote the Air Jordan line. The sneaker was later retroed in 1994, 2011, 2013, and 2016. The 2011 version paid homage to the 'Banned' nickname with an 'X' on the heel.
